New Orleans Plantation Tour

Adventure outside the city in the comfort of a private vehicle to a historic plantation on the New Orleans Plantation Tour. This tour is an excellent way to see the rural Mississippi River Delta, learn about the economy and architecture of a sugarcane plantation, and explore the experiences of the thousands of people who were enslaved in the area.

What Plantation to Visit?

If you do not have a strong preference, then I typically visit Laura Plantation on the New Orleans Plantation Tour. The only Creole Plantation offers a 70-minute tour that is based on 5,000 pages of documents from the French National Archives related to the free and enslaved families who lived there. You will learn the compelling, real-life accounts of 7 generations of Laura Plantation’s Creole inhabitants. With 11 structures listed on the National Register, Laura Plantation offers guests the chance to explore its newly restored Manor House, the formal and kitchen gardens, Banana-Land grove, and its authentic Creole cottages and slave cabins.

Other plantations in the area include Oak Alley Plantation. In addition to being one of the most visually stunning and well maintained in the area, Oak Alley has both an excellent slavery exhibit and an amazing collection of historic live oak trees. The Oak Alley slavery exhibit consists of 6 cabins built with a different exhibit inside, showing the living quarters, medical facility, inventories and valuations of the enslaved people, and much more. Additionally, the alley of oaks itself consists of twenty-eight live oak trees dating back nearly 250 years.

The Houmas House Estate farmed sugarcane on tens of thousands of acres, and became the largest producer of sugar in the country, deemed "The Sugar Palace". The mansion has been restored to the antebellum era, reflecting the opulence and wealth this sugarcane farm boasted in the 1880’s. Inside, guests will find history reflected in the many antique furnishings and works of art that grace the home’s 16 glorious rooms. Outside, visitors can stroll through 38 acres of breathtaking, lush gardens, which are replanted throughout the year to reflect the season.

And finally, Destrehan Plantation, established in 1787 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, remains the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi Valley. The plantation exhibits an original document signed by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of State James Madison. Located on the historic River Road, this antebellum home with its lush green grounds and moss draped Live Oaks watches over the banks of the Mississippi River just minutes away from New Orleans.
